Ceramic Workshop at Tecnargilla 2006

Ceramic Workshop, the collection of exhibits first launched in 2002 with the aim of pushing back the horizons of application of ceramic in homes and cities of the future, will return to Rimini from 28 September to 2 October this year at Tecnargilla 2006, the 20th International Exhibition of Technologies and Supplies for the Ceramic and Brick Industries organised by Rimini Fiera SpA in cooperation with Acimac.

The first section is the proposals area coordinated by the IED (European Design Institute) and featuring a competition in which young international designers will submit projects based on the common theme of ceramic. The designers will adapt the intrinsic characteristics of this multifunctional material to the widest range of applications, including the food, music, automotive and town planning sectors.

"The decision to involve Barcelona and Madrid stemmed from my idea of using the European Design Institute network, the most important in the world in the field of private design training," explained IED Project Coordinator Giacomo Bertolazzi. "What we are presenting at Tecnargilla is a kind of expanded laboratory. Besides using ceramic as a material for experimentation, it also provides an opportunity for dialogue between different European cultures, in this case those of Italy and Spain, countries that both have a long ceramic tradition.

"This third Tecnargilla is a chance for us to establish important synergies with leading companies that offer training and professional opportunities for students. There are three important aspects of cooperation with companies. Research: through an analysis of ceramic and its multiple uses, young designers seek novel fields of application with a strong focus on technological innovation, particularly with regard to performance. Secondly, companies make a concrete contribution to the implementation of projects. And thirdly, in many cases they offer employment."

The concepts presented by the IED students explore innovative and concrete uses of ceramic that adapt very well to the multifunctionality of this material. In the central hall of the Rimini exhibition centre, visitors will be able to admire a ceramic parabolic dish capable of directing, reflecting and regulating sound, a glass ceramic plate on which precise food cooking times can be set, and ceramic decorations in the interior and exterior of a car. Visitors will be able to enjoy a cocktail cooled with ceramic cubes in place of the traditional ice and admire a mobile ceramic stove that provides the perfect heating solution and even has a hob for cooking.

The Ceramic Workshop will also be featuring Color Trends, an area that offers a short journey into the future of ceramic, an exploration of new colour trends and applications, finishings and decorations in the various sectors of industrial production.

100% Ceramic House will be an accessible, inhabitable, entirely ceramic ambience in which multi-sensorial spaces are characterised by diversified, futuristic uses of ceramic, whether as partition coverings, furnishing elements or accessories.

The Ceramic Workshop will even have an art exhibition. In the area devoted to Ceramic Story, Tecnargilla will be featuring a selection of ceramics from the MAIB, Bitossi Artistic Industrial Museum. The museum derives from Bitossi’s experience in the world of ceramic and alongside a large collection of exhibits also includes an extensive industrial documentation centre that is widely used for scientific research.

As part of its conference programme, Ceramic Workshop is organising a convention catering for designers as a partnership between the Italian Ceramic Society, Acimac and Ceramicolor (Italian ceramic glaze and colour and metal oxide producers’ association). The speakers will include architects, university lecturers and designers who will address the theme of creativity in relation to the various fields of application and aesthetic development of ceramic products.
