Science of Whitewares IV - Conference in Europe

A Comprehensive Discussion of Whiteware Manufacturing Science

Background

The first Science of Whitewares conference was held in July 1995 and was designed to comprehensively address the Manufacturing of traditional materials from a scientific perspective. The proceedings of that conference, entitled Science of Whitewares, was one of the most popular technical titles in the American Ceramic Society in 1996. The next two conferences (in 1998 and 2000) were topical: Science of Whitewares II (1998) addressed aspects of the manufacturing process up to forming; and Science of Whitewares III (2000) focused on post forming operations.

A fourth conference, Science of Whitewares - Europe, is planned for June 16-20, 2002 in Modena, Italy. It is anticipated that the fourth conference will be similar in scope to the first Science of Whitewares conference, with a majority of speakers invited from the European Union. In addition, this conference will be jointly hosted by the Whiteware Research Centre, the University of Modena in Italy and CERAM Research Ltd.

Conference Format

The program will consist of invited and contributed papers primarily as oral presentations. Poster sessions will be with the goal of attracting students to present their research in traditional ceramics. The registration fee for students presenting posters will be waived. The conference is structured to provide opportunities for informal discussions among the participants. The first technical session is planned for Sunday afternoon; the final session will conclude Wednesday evening. All meals (continental breakfast, lunches, and dinners) are included in the registration fee. Dress is casual.

Program

Papers are solicited for all aspects of whiteware manufacturing, including, but not limited to:

Raw materials
Processing
Forming
Drying
Firing and densification
Glazing and decoration
Mechanical behaviour

Abstract Submission Deadline is November 1, 2001

The abstracts will be reviewed for appropriateness, applicability, and scientific merit. Authors of contributed abstracts will be notified of acceptance status by December 1, 2001.

Format instructions for oral and poster presentations will be mailed upon acceptance of the abstract. Accepted and invited abstracts will be compiled and distributed to participants at the conference.

Author(s) affiliation (no titles)

If the abstract is faxed, a cover sheet must be included that provides the appropriate contact information (name, address, phone number, fax number, and email address of the contact person). Student abstracts are planned to be presented as posters unless specifically requested to be an oral presentation. All other presentations are expected to be oral presentations unless requested otherwise.

Conference Proceedings

As with the previous conferences, the proceedings are planned to be published by the American Ceramic Society. Details regarding proceedings format, page limitations, and other publication information will be provided with the acceptance of the abstract. Poster submissions will be published in an extended abstract form. Camera-ready manuscripts must be submitted on the first day of the conference at the registration desk.
