Spotlight on Health & Safety Hosted by WBB

Developments in the world of health and safety were the discussion points at a seminar recently organised by the Silica and Moulding Sands Association (SAMSA), part of the Quarry Products Association, with the assistance of WBB Minerals.

Approximately 40 representatives of leading SAMSA member companies - including Aggregate Industries, Bathgate Group, RMC, Tarmac and WBB Minerals - attended the seminar at WBB's headquarters in Sandbach, Cheshire, England.

This is the second time that the event has been run and demand was very high for the limited number of places. Topics covered at the seminar included: hard targets for accident reduction and the role of safety representatives; a progress report from Tarmac on the implementation of the Dupont auditing system; training and competence; what to expect when an inspector calls; and a practical presentation on a new on-board system for brake testing of mobile plant.

Andy Price, Health & Safety Manager for WBB Minerals, said: "It is vital that we all keep in touch with the latest developments in the field of health and safety, particularly with respect to auditing, training and new equipment. Feedback from the seminar was very positive and given the level of interest by SAMSA members this year, it is hoped that it will be an annual event".

SAMSA Director Carl Kirby added: "The seminar was extremely well received and delegates were certainly given a lot to think about in their quest to reduce the number of notifiable accidents. What made the seminar really invaluable to members were the wide range of topics covered and the opportunity to hear both sides of the story with a perspective from the Health & Safety Inspectorate as well as from companies' own experiences".
