New Industry Event on Rare Earths

The first International Rare Earths Conference is being held from 24-26 October 2004 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong. UK based companies Roskill Information Services and Metal Events Ltd are organising the event. There has already been a good response from the industry to this new event, with senior officials from a number of leading rare earths producers and consumers taking part.

Special features planned for the conference include a focus on China's rare earth industry, a review of trends in rare earths demand and possible supply constraints, and the investigation of the potential for an integrated rare earths supply chain.

Roskill expects demand for rare earths over the next three to four years to be in the range of 4% to 9% per year. On this basis, total world demand could exceed 100,000 tpy REO for the first time by this year. Over the past three to four years, China has increased its dominance of the world market, supplying an estimated 85%-95% of world demand in 2000.
