Ceramics & Ceramic Matrix Composites Course

A course on Ceramics & Ceramic Matrix Composites will be held at the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey (Guildford, Surrey, England) from 9-13 May 2005. The course will provide a detailed consideration of the processing and mechanical properties of engineering ceramics and ceramic matrix composites.

The functional properties of ceramics will be introduced, as will topics such as wear, thermomechanical behaviour, design and fractography. In these topics, both ceramics and ceramic matrix composites will be considered where appropriate. Additionally, there will be lectures on individual groups of materials. The lecture content will be reinforced and enhanced through tutorial/exercise class sessions.

The course is designed for scientists and engineers seeking an understanding of engineering ceramics and ceramic matrix composites. It will be suitable for graduates with no or limited ceramic experience wishing to widen the scope of their knowledge. There are no formal prerequisites but some basic knowledge of materials science will be assumed.

The course will commence mid-morning on 9 May and conclude in the afternoon of 13 May. It is designed to be intensive and each day there will be about six hours of classes.
