Encore 10 x 10 : Leading Artists Share in £100,000 Windfall

Ceramicist Paul Scott and glass artist Sue Woolhouse are among 10 of the
North of England's leading artists set to share £100,000 as Northern Arts
gives away close to £500,000 in one of the region's biggest ever arts cash
bonanzas.

The Encore 10 x 10 awards are the largest ever given to individuals by
Northern Arts. A total of 100 applications were received and some of the
best known figures from the North's arts community were in contention.

Paul Scott - who is currently based in Wigton in Cumbria - said: "The
normal economics of surviving as a visual artist means that spending a
concentrated period of time on speculative research is seldom possible, so I
am delighted to have been awarded an Encore Bursary, to enable me to do just
that.

"I will use the bursary to further explore printing processes, and digital
image manipulation used in the industrial production of under-glaze blue and
white ceramics. I also intend to further explore archives of specialist
image collections assessing their suitability and availability for creative
engagement."

Sue Woolhouse said: "I will be able to take time out to experiment with new
glass products on the market. The materials have been available in Europe
for several years, and it's only recently that manufacturers have started
importing to this country as the market becomes more lucrative".
