Corning and A*STAR Announce New Research Agreement

Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Corning Incorporated have announced a new, collaborative research agreement to leverage on each organisation's multidisciplinary capabilities in material science and process engineering. The collaboration will study the application of Corning materials, including cellular ceramic materials and structures, for application in the chemical processing and environmental technology fields, two areas in which A*STAR has expertise.

The collaboration will be conducted between the research teams of A*STAR's Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) and Corning's Sullivan Park R&D Center in Corning, New York. Corning is sponsoring a post-doctoral researcher to work with the technical team at ICES. The research agreement was signed by Dr. Ralph E. Truitt, Director Characterization Science & Services and Advanced Materials Processing Labs of Corning Inc, and Dr. Keith Carpenter, Executive Director of ICES.

One of ICES research programmes, which focuses on developing novel chemical processing technologies relevant to the petrochemical, fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries, will be collaborating with Corning to develop new applications based on Corning's leadership in ceramics research and development.

Professor Chong Tow Chong, Executive Director of A*STAR's Science and Engineering Council (SERC) commented: "We are very pleased that our discussions on mutual opportunities with Corning have resulted in this collaboration. Both organizations have strong interdisciplinary research programs addressing the world's most relevant markets and emerging technologies. We are excited about the possibilities this new relationship can bring."

Dr. Joseph Miller, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Corning, said: "Over the last nine years of my involvement I have come to recognize the capabilities of A*STAR and its institutes to conduct leading applied science. These capabilities coupled to a strong chemical manufacturing base offer excellent conditions to develop new materials and process technologies. We are delighted to enter this collaborative relationship with A*STAR and ICES".

This is the second collaborative agreement Corning has undertaken with the A*STAR institutes. A research agreement between Corning and the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) is currently underway.
