Record Price for a Clarice Cliff Vase

Christie's of London has announced that during an auction of ware held on 25 May 2001, a private collector from the USA paid a record amount for a Clarice Cliff ceramic vase. 'TENNIS' - a 'Bizarre' 369 vase, painted in colours and standing 19.5cm high, fetched £12,925, which was nearly four times the estimate.

Alexandra Bellamy, British Decorative Arts Specialist, commented: "We were extremely pleased with today's sale which demonstrated the strength of the Clarice Cliff market and included a record-breaking 'Tennis' pattern vase. The geometric patterns attracted the most attention, with a new collector paying £8,812 for a 'Sunray' charger".

Several of the final hammer prices for major pieces outstripped their estimates, in the main by a substantial margin.
