Brick Design for the Façade of the Future

BRICK: THE EXHIBITION – taking place at Groot Handelsgebouw, Rotterdam, Netherlands from 25 May to 1 July 2007 – is a unique exhibition by the European Ceramic Work Centre (.ekwc) centring on the ceramic skin of the building.

The façade of the future is given a fresh and new face with the input of 16 architects, designers and visual artists from home and abroad. They were inspired by what they call “the most taken for granted building material our country knows: the brick”. The results are as diverse as the participants themselves and testify to intensive form research, the search for new functionality of the brick as well as an artistic approach to the material.

On show is a wall of golden bricks, the decay of the brick, bricks that glow in the dark, a ballroom dress of bricks, an installation of computer designed, organic bricks, a brick tapestry – just a few of the 35 designs in this exhibition.

The exhibition itself comprises 750 square metres of inspiration in ceramics, a well stacked bookshop, a café and a cinema showing the ceramic work process, all of it within walking distance of Rotterdam Central Station.
