AMCOL International Acquires European Specialised Mineral and Chemical Company

AMCOL International Corporation (Arlington Heights, IL, USA) announced on 23 May 2002 that it had acquired Colin Stewart Minchem Ltd (Winsford, Cheshire, England), a speciality minerals and chemical company.

CSM's sales are approximately US$25 million. It supplies intermediate products, industrial minerals, inorganic chemicals and additives.

Larry Washow, AMCOL's President and CEO, said: "Acquiring CSM further strengthens AMCOL's global presence. It is an acquisition that fits our business model well and contributes immediately to our bottom line, while positioning us for further growth.

"CSM has been active in the detergent industry for more than 20 years developing technology in an exciting global consumer market. Originally, CSM was a mineral processing company, which has built a major position in the processing and supply of value-added detergent intermediates. CSM has built a portfolio of new products and services including desiccants and organoclay which offer quality, diversity and good returns."

CSM, a subsidiary of Torday & Carlisle PLC, has three manufacturing operations in the UK - in Winsford, Cheshire, in Telford, Shropshire and Ellesmere Port, Merseyside. CSM also has a research facility at the Winsford site.

AMCOL produces and markets speciality mineral products used for industrial, environmental and consumer-related applications. Terms of this transaction were not disclosed.
