Timken's Ceramic Hybrid Bearings Deliver Required Performance

Timken Aerospace and Super Precision (Canton, OH, USA) - a subsidiary of The Timken Company - has designed and introduced a new hybrid ceramic ball bearing for super precision applications, which has proven effective in solving customers' challenges. Hoffer Flow Controls Inc wanted to improve its high precision turbine flowmeter systems. It turned to Timken for the solution and the hybrid ceramic bearing is now one of the key features in this flowmeter.

"Through the continuing partnership with Timken, Hoffer can maintain the quality standard for customer satisfaction and sustain a worldwide leadership role in turbine flowmeter technology," said John Gannon, Hoffer's Marketing Manager. "We wanted to show Timken our appreciation for their engineering team's customer-focused approach in providing us with a solution so we created a trade advertisement to formally thank them. I know it has influenced a number of turbine orders from new customers. That's what it's all about."

Hybrid bearings have a combination of ceramic rolling elements and metallic races and are manufactured in virtually every size and type. Hoffer credits the bearings as the point of differentiation from other turbine flowmeters. Their tests show the hybrid ceramic ball bearings extend the service life by up to five times.

"We offer products and services that enable our customers to come directly to us for their bearing needs and we continue to develop solutions that bring them the best value," said Don LeRoy, General Manager-Super Precision at Timken. "Our team approach brings together two companies that are known for providing high performance products."

The Timken Super Precision business, headquartered in Keene, NH, USA, manufactures ball bearings and precision assemblies for applications such as airplane instruments, medical and dental equipment, precision industrial applications and semiconductor manufacturing tools. Timken says that its Super Precision business has emerged as an industry leader in applying ceramics to speciality ball bearings.
