Royal Crown Derby Opens for Business in America

The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company Ltd, which two years ago was bought from Royal Doulton by chief executive Hugh Gibson, is now establishing its own sales company to serve the American market.

As part of the original purchase agreement, Royal Doulton continued to distribute Royal Crown Derby products in the USA for two years. From March 2002, all sales will be handled directly by Royal Crown Derby USA.

Hugh Gibson described the new arrangement as "the best possible way to deal with the vitally important American market".

"Royal Doulton," he added, "has always looked after our interest in the United States extremely professionally. But now we have our own company that deals only with Royal Crown Derby products through our own company sales force. It is tremendously exciting."

The new American company will be run by Monica Watts as vice president sales and marketing. She joins from Royal Doulton USA where, for the past six years, she has worked on Royal Crown Derby.

"From our new offices in North Hollywood, California, we will handle all US sales for the tableware, giftware and collectable ranges," explained Monica. "Americans love Royal Crown Derby because of the exquisite use of colours and designs. In some senses this is more important than the fact that the company is English and 252 years old."

Talking about the UK and US trade, she added: "One difference between the two markets is that traditional dinnerware remains a major sector in the US. Visit any department store and there will be an area dedicated to traditional dining. Once again, it's the unique Royal Crown Derby signature colours and designs that single us out as being unique and popular".
