Powder Injection Seminar Breaks the Mould

The latest innovations and techniques in powder injection moulding have been revealed by two of Europe's leading experts at a technical seminar organised by Warwickshire based injection moulding machine supplier, ARBURG.

The seminar gave delegates the opportunity to learn more about this process, which is seeing increasing use for the production of complex shaped products, particularly those made of metal and ceramics.

The presentations covered different materials available for powder injection moulding, explored case studies and outlined the most modern processing techniques. A practical demonstration was given during the day on an ARBURG 35-ton machine specifically brought over for the event from the company's research and design department in Lossburg, Germany. A single impression tool was run producing a component in iron silicone.

Among the delegates was Graham Newman, Project Engineer at Worcestershire based Morgan Advanced Ceramics, who commented: "The event was very useful in terms of reaffirming the advantages of the injection moulding process for which a number of new market areas are opening up. We have recently invested in three ARBURG machines which are crucial to our goal of enhanced product quality and accuracy".

Frank Davis, Managing Director of ARBURG Ltd, added: "Powder injection moulding has traditionally been a niche market in the UK and the rest of the world but increased demand for products with complex geometries means that the process is becoming increasingly used as it is the only way of producing certain products.

"Indeed, the process is rapidly becoming the norm for producing items in industries as diverse as automotive components, electrical components, turbine blades and medical equipment.

"The seminar set out to equip delegates with the knowledge they require to optimise their use of the very latest PIM technologies and so enhance their competitive edge in this ever more challenging market-place."
