Indian Ceramic Cluster to Capitalise on Reduction in Carbon Emissions

TNN has reported that ceramic players from Morbi (Gujarat, India) have joined the race to capitalise on reduction in emissions of carbon from their respective industries and earning carbon credits. Carbon credits are certificates issued to countries that reduce their emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs), which lead to global warming.

It is estimated that 60%-70% of the GHG emission is through fuel combustion in industries like cement, steel, textiles and fertilisers. Some GHG gases like hydro fluorocarbons, methane and nitrous oxide are released as by-products of certain industrial process which affect the ozone layer, leading to global warming.

A few companies from the Gujarati ceramic cluster –  including Decolight Ceramics (Rs 100 crore turnover), Face Ceramics (Rs 20 crore), Favourite Ceramics (Rs 15 crore) and Soriso Ceramics ( Rs 20 crore) – are together investing around Rs 35 crore in projects like converting fossil fuel into biomass.

Decolight Ceramics has already set up a 1.25MW wind turbine generator (WTG) at Kadoli in Kutch district and is now setting up two more WTGs with a capacity of 1.25MW and 2.1MW, respectively, thus generating a total of 4.6MW at an investment of Rs 30 crore. This development in the ceramic industry as a part of Clean Mechanism Development Project under Kyoto Protocol will generate 1.75 lakh metric tonne carbon from Morbi very year.

According to Deco Group Chairman, Girishbhai Pethapara, Gujarati companies could get a twin benefit. Firstly, they will be part of the pollution control efforts world-wide and secondly, the efforts will have a positive impact on their image.
