Changes at Hitachi Scientific Instruments

In a key strategic move to consolidate development, manufacturing, sales, marketing and support activities, it has been announced that Hitachi's Instruments Group and Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Group will be separated from Hitachi Ltd and merged with Nissei Sangyo.

This will take place on 1 October 2001, subject to formal approval at Nissei Sangyo's Ordinary General Meeting of shareholders in June and, at the same time, Nissei Sangyo Co Ltd will be renamed. It is expected that the new company will be called Hitachi Advanced Technologies Ltd. The new company will also take responsibility for the sales of Hitachi Medical's clinical testing systems, resulting in an organisation that the company says will be at the leading edge of nanotechnology, biotechnology and instrumentation.

Combining Hitachi's proven expertise in the development and manufacture of electron microscopes, clinical analysers, semiconductor manufacturing, inspection and evaluation equipment with Nissei Sangyo's global sales and support strengths, will allow the new company to respond even faster to the needs of customers in these rapidly expanding markets.

The new organisation will employ around 8,400 personnel world-wide, with projected sales of 900 billion yen in 2002.
