Latest Hard Material Research

A Measurement Note has been produced by NPL on fractographic assessment of porosity and fracture origins in PM materials. The Note demonstrates the use of the V-notch specimen configuration in fatigue.

This technique produces data with a minimum scatter and to which Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) can be readily applied to reconcile fatigue behaviour with pre-existing flaws and apparent subcritical flaw growth during fatigue where appropriate.

Other Measurement Notes and NPL reports include:

• pore shape characterisation of PM materials.

• the role of corrosion in the ball cratering wear test.

• step-wise erosion to determine the mechanisms of wear in gas borne particulate erosion of a WC/Co hardmetal.

• elastic modulus measurement using impact excitation.
