Sensing Success for Functional Ceramics

Earlier this year, a team of UK experts mounted a highly successful DTI Mission to Japan to explore scientific and commercial developments in the field of piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Publication of the mission report will be marked by a one-day launch workshop to be held at the Excel Centre, London on 27 March 2003.

Ceramic materials currently form the basis of sensors and actuators and are already is use in digital watches, fuel injectors, medical imaging systems and aircraft accelerometers. Their precise, reliable and energy efficient operation also means that they are poised to provide solutions for an even wider range of industries.

Setting out to benchmark Japan's expertise relative to the UK's in functional sensors and actuators based on ferroelectric solid-state materials and to explore strategic collaboration, the mission team visited some of the leading companies and research centres across Japan.

The event is for decision makers from industry, research and government organisations responsible for introducing and developing functional ceramics and allied technologies. Those unable to attend workshop but wishing to receive a copy of the report can contact NPL's Materials Enquiry Point: enquiry@npl.co.uk
