Dankotuwa Introduces Hands-on Activity & Factory Visits

Continuing with its strategy of innovation, Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd (Dankotuwa, Sri Lanka) has introduced a 'Hands-on Activity' at its Colombo Showrooms for anyone who wishes to decorate his/her own porcelain item. A variety of printed decorations on decal paper is available for customers to try their hands affixing decals on to a porcelain mug, plate, napkin ring etc.

Colour pigments are also available for those with an artistic bent who wish to use pigments with brushes. The decorated item will thereafter be sent to the factory for the final decoration firing and will be sent back to the Showrooms from where the customer could collect it after one week. A nominal charge will be levied to cover the cost of porcelain items and the materials used. This would be an ideal opportunity for those who wish to have their own hand-made items gifted to relatives and friends.

In the recent past, Dankotuwa has had to turn down many requests for factory visits because of the re-organisations going on in the factory. However, now a specially made programme has been designed for those who wish to visit the factory and gain an understanding of how porcelain is produced.

"Our factory tour takes visitors through the main working factory and is therefore much more exciting than many other factory tours in other countries where visitors are taken through a model factory or only a limited portion of the factory," said Giyanie Fernando, Manager - Corporate Affairs.

The factory tour will include a briefing on the process, the tour itself with specially designed explanation stations and ending up with an optional hands-on activity, similar to the one initiated at the Colombo Showrooms. The company said that a charge would be levied on each visitor, of which half would go into the 'Employee Children Education Fund'. Since only a limited number can be accommodated for a single tour, bookings have to be made in advance.
