Weak Economy Sees Sales Dip at SCCI
Total revenues for the first quarter of 2003 at Superconductive Components Inc (Columbus, OH, USA) declined by 16% to US$657,879 from US$783,379 in the first quarter of 2002. Product revenues were US$624,546 (Q1 2002: US$714,148), while contract research revenue was US$33,333 (Q1 2002: US$69,231).
SCCI cited a weak national economy as the main factor for the decline in product revenues, while the much lower contract research figure this time round followed expiration of a Phase II SBIR grant from the National Science Foundation.
Gross profit was US$149,218 (or 22.7% of total revenue for Q1 2003) versus US$186,370 (or 23.8%) a year ago. Lower sales and product mix influenced the Q1 2003 margin compared to Q1 2002.
Sales and promotional expenses rose to US$48,256 compared with US$41,513 last year, due to higher commission costs and trade show attendance.
SCCI manufactures advanced ceramics, optical materials and high temperature superconductive and non-superconductive products.
