Rugby's Ongoing Commitment to the Environment

Rugby Cement has demonstrated its commitment to the environment through the implementation of a globally recognised environmental management system at its new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Rugby.

ISO 14001 is an international standard that acknowledges an organisations commitment to the systematic management of environmental issues and ongoing improvements in environmental performance. In support of the company's formal Environmental Policy Statement. the new intranet based system has been applied at Rugby to ensure that management standards across the state-of-the-art plant reach and remain the highest level.

The route to gaining ISO l4001 status consists of 2 principal stages, both of which are assessed by externally- accredited auditors. The first stage. which Rugby passed with flying colours at the end of last year, allows the auditors to review the documented system. Stage 2 due to take place over the coming months, involves an extensive audit of the implementation of the documented system. Once Stage 2 has been successfully completed, the Rugby plant will have full ISO 14001 status and will subsequently be audited every 6 months to ensure the standards remain at this high level.

David Evans, UK Technical Manager at Rugby Cement comments:
"As a company, Rugby has always incorporated a responsible approach to environmental management as an integral part of its business strategy. By adopting the principles involved in this Environmental Management System, we are able to publicly demonstrate that we are dedicated to continually improving our environmental performance. From the initial policy development to the identification of key environmental aspects and right through to the development of the operating procedures, the process has been extremely systematic and detailed".

"The best thing about this system is that there is no end point - it is just not just a means of gaining a standard and that being the end of it. Rather, this is an ongoing process that ensures that New Rugby can continuously and systematically improve its environmental performance and everyone involved in New Rugby Works is fully aware of the part they play in the control and management of the systems that are now in place."

Rugby Cement is one of the UK's leading cement manufacturers and, following its acquisition by RMC Group in January of this year, now forms part of one of the world's largest building materials groups. The company has a formal Environmental Policy Statement which details its undertaking to recognise environmental concerns as a fundamental and integral part of the business planning process.
