JM's R&D Comes Up With New Products

In its annual report, Johnson Matthey said that the Colours & Coatings Division continues to place great emphasis on product and process development, both of which it says are key to the ability to grow sales and sustain margins.

Considerable resources are dedicated to research, both at the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre in Sonning, Berks, England and at the major European facilities in Holland, Italy, Spain and the UK.

In the past year the research structure, focused on the core areas of fundamental chemistry, cost reduction technologies and product development, continued to deliver innovative solutions for the market.

These included the development of a new and novel yellow pigment, high conductivity silver pastes and a new decorative precious metal product for tableware based on fundamentally more controllable chemistry.

JM added that going forward, management remained focused on delivering a pipeline of market driven research and product developments to underpin future profitability.

For the year ended 31 March 2004, the Colours & Coatings Division turned over 254 million (around the same as the previous year) and registered an operating profit of 26.7 million, up 5.53% from the previous year's figure of 25.3 million.
