New Hungarian Brick Plant Nears Completion

The construction by Wienerberger AG (Vienna) of a new plant in the northeast Hungarian city of Tiszavasvari was started in 2004 and, it has been announced, will soon be completed. Tiszavasvari is the largest and most modern hollow brick plant in the country.

Test runs will begin in the second half of June and full operations will start on schedule in October this year. "Tiszavasvari represents a key strategic location for Wienerberger, and will allow us to serve the entire market in eastern Hungary and eastern Slovakia," commented Johann Windisch, member of the Managing Board. "Even though the residential construction market in Hungary is currently declining, we expect it will recover in the foreseeable future."

This new site will significantly shorten transportation routes to the target markets and allow for the realisation of cost savings. The investment in Tiszavasvari totals roughly ?20 million. Expert opinion is forecasting an annual requirement of 44,000 new housing units in order to prevent an increase in the supply of outdated housing in the country. A plant like Tiszavasvari is capable of producing around 300,000 cubic metre of product per annum.
