Riedhammer Supplies Cuban Sanitaryware Industry

A delivery and installation which has been handled by Riedhammer, Nürnberg based German member company of the Sacmi Group, has seen a major upgrade in Cuba’s ceramic sanitaryware production. The supply, to Cerámica Blanca, includes all the in-line equipment, from body preparation to mouldmaking technology (body and glaze mills excepted).

Cerámica Blanca, located in San José – not far from the capital Havana – decided to aim for nothing less than complete renewal of its production facilities. The new line, which became operational a few months ago, has been designed to produce over 150,000 sanitaryware articles a year – about 550 every day – using extremely energy efficient methods throughout the process. About a third of the output is accounted for by WCs; together with the two washbasin models, one with pedestal, the plant can meet demand for complete bathrooms.

What is said to make the San José plant so special is the installation of a special nine-car Riedhammer designed shuttle kiln – diesel-fuelled in this case as there are no other local fuel supplies – with an 18-20 hour firing cycle.

The San José plant is not the Sacmi Group’s first contact with Cuba. Twenty years ago, Cuba was the first country in all of Central America and the Caribbean to purchase a complete plant from Sacmi Imola; the plant was installed in the eastern town of Holguín. In this case too, the customer expressed enormous satisfaction with the achieved product quality and productivity.
