Brookhaven Increases Sensitivity of Particle Measurement System

Brookhaven Instruments Ltd (Stock Wood, Worcs, England) has launched a photodiode detector option for its 90Plus particle size analyser, enabling it to detect particles with hydrodynamic radii as small as 1.5nm.

The BI-APD avalanche photodiode detector is said to have more than 10 times the sensitivity of the standard PMT detector using only the standard 30mW laser. The BI-APD can be used in conjunction with Brookhaven's ZetaPlus and ZetaPALS instruments to take measurements of small globular proteins, micelles, microemulsions, superfine inorganic oxides, metal particles and even hydrated salt ions. Analysis of weakly scattering samples becomes much easier and, claims the company, because a high powered laser is not required, more economical.

Brookhaven has also launched a disposable small-volume cell for those occasions when only a milligram or two of sample is available for light scattering studies. The BI-SM50 cell can hold 50 microlitre of sample and fits directly on to the top of a custom adapter in the 90Plus or BI-MAS options on the ZetaPlus and ZetaPALS. The BI-SM50 is claimed to be of particular benefit where very little sample exists - samples can be used undiluted and the open-well design of the cell permits their easy removal for reconstitution.
