Rheology Seminar for Ceramic Technicians is Well Received

On 14 July 2007, more than 200 ceramic technicians participated in a conference organised by ACIMAC (the Association of Italian Manufacturers of Machinery and Equipment for Ceramics) and the Italian Ceramics Society at My Hotel Executive in Fiorano Modenese. "This eagerly awaited and much appreciated event proved the need for technical training and skills updating for specialists in the ceramics sector" said ACIMAC.

Rheology plays a key role in numerous phases of ceramic production from application in primary materials suspended in water (slip), glazes and inks, to pressing and firing. For example, knowledge of the precise behaviour of materials as they begin to melt can improve planarity and eliminate deformations. In short, the application of rheology in ceramics can enhance productivity and reduce operating costs.

The event was introduced by the President of the Italian Ceramics Society, Professor Paolo Zannini, who subsequently presented the other speakers, with ACIMAC Director Paolo Gambuli stressing the long-term need for training and investment in technology to ensure high quality production.

This was followed by a series of stimulating papers by top Italian experts in the field: Davide Gardini from the Italian National Research Board's Institute of Science and Technology in Faenza; Eugenia Rastelli from the Ceramics Centre of Bologna; Marcello Romagnoli from the Department of Engineering Materials at the University of Modena & Reggio and advisor to the Italian Rheology Society.

There were also interesting contributions by various important representatives from the private sector including Giorgio Mojoli, a specialist from ITALSCIENTIFICA of Genoa, Mariano Paganelli from Expert System Solutions and Alan Nappa from Lamberti Ceramics Additives.
