Morgan Advanced Ceramics Secures Three-Year Contract with Renishaw

Leading ceramic component manufacturer Morgan Advanced Ceramics has signed a three-year contract with Renishaw PLC to supply ceramic stems for its range of styli and accessories used with the company’s precision probes. The contract comes as the two companies celebrate eight years of successful
partnership and is the largest single order received by the Rugby-based materials specialist for its ceramic stems, reported to be in excess of 50,000 parts per year.

Morgan Advanced Ceramics will supply the 96% alumina ceramic stems in a range of sizes from 20mm to 200mm (length) and from 3mm to 10mm (diameter). In addition to 17 standard sizes the company will also supply made-to-order stems, enabling Renishaw to offer bespoke solutions to its extensive global
customer base of manufacturers and users of industrial metrology equipment.

"Every company needs to assess what value-added services it can offer," commented Phil James, Sales Executive, Morgan Advanced Ceramics. "Otherwise it won’t survive in the global marketplace. In our case it’s flexibility combined with extensive materials expertise and experience."

The sacrificial stem plays a key role in Renishaw’s probing systems so in the event of collision with the work piece being measured, the stem will break thus protecting the probe from expensive accidental damage.

"The 96% Alumina that we use for the stems offers the best breaking point for this application," explained Phil James. "It’s strong enough to support the instrument and ensure it can provide long and reliable service, but brittle enough to break when required."

Renishaw assesses its suppliers by measuring three core competencies: quality, delivery and commercial response. The company has awarded Morgan Advanced Ceramics ‘A Class’ supplier status.
