Opportunity to join Recycling R&D Project

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has recently announced a tender for projects exploring the use of waste Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) glass as a useful raw material. CRT glass waste from old TVs, PC monitors amounts to some 105,000 tonnes per annum in the UK and projections for the next 10 years suggests little if any decline in this level of waste. Applications for this waste are urgently sought. Further information can be found on the WRAP web site (http://www.wrap.org.uk/)

The Process & Materials division at CERAM is exploring the possibility of submitting a proposal that investigates the use of CRT glass as a partial replacement for feldspar, nepheline syenite mineral fluxes in tableware and tile bodies. The project would consider recycling of the barium, strontium containing screen glass (and not the lead containing neck, tube sections). This project would be a logical extension to an existing WRAP project considering waste bottle glass in sanitaryware bodies.

CERAM is interested in hearing from any UK tile or tableware producers interested in participating. No cash input is required, but a willingness to offer Contribution in Kind in terms of factory trials is essential. Interested companies should contact Dr. Phil Jackson (Direct Tel: 01782 764253; e-mail: phil.jackson@ceram.com) in the first instance.

There is a tight dead-line of 30th July for proposal delivery and so a reply by 23rd July at the latest is requested.
