Collaboration in Materials Measurement

If your company has an idea for a collaborative materials measurement project, then NPL would like to hear from you. The materials centre is setting up a number of "Studios", or groups of small projects researching solutions to specific measurement problems. With support from the DTI, as little as 10% financial contribution is required to get a project underway.

A minimum of three companies are required to set up a Studio project, preferably from stages in a materials supply chain. Projects involving SME's will be given a higher priority. NPL can help set up consortia with similar interests. The scope is broad, which allows specific problems to be addressed.

Studio projects can be set up to:

  • assess the feasibility for a larger project
  • provide a solution to a generic industrial measurement problem
  • develop new test methods, models or databases for industrial use
  • compare measurement test procedures resulting in best practise or benchmarking
  • address any measurement problems arising from characterisation, performance, processing modelling or degradation of materials

  • Current projects are outlined on the NPL website at: www.npl.co.uk/npl/cmmt/collaborative.html

Studio projects can help companies increase their competitiveness, as results can remain confidential for a specified time period.

To qualify for support, a project requires matching contributions from participating companies. This can be a combination of cash and in-kind contributions such as materials, components or access to plant and expertise.

NPL welcomes suggestions for studio projects and will seek DTI support in all eligible cases.
