Flexiform - A Novel Casting Technology From CERAM

CERAM has been awarded funding for one of the largest projects sponsored by the European Commission in the current round of the GROWTH programme (part of Framework V). This flagship project, which will run for 3 years, has the potential to generate a step change in technology for the manufacture of tableware and sanitaryware in Europe.

In collaboration with eight partners from across Europe, CERAM will develop and evaluate a new system for shaping complex ceramic articles. The new FLEXIFORM technology will use enhanced casting technology, novel moulds based on engineered materials, and flexible casting machines.

Computer aided engineering techniques will enable direct CNC machining of the moulds allowing the process to be faster, more flexible and cost effective than conventional pressure casting methods. CERAM's expertise in process modelling will also be used to ensure that the new FLEXIFORM process is incorporated on-site to give the fastest and most agile process route. These improvements will enable rapid introduction and modification of new product designs, assisting manufacturers to become more competitive and responsive to rapidly changing market demands.

The companies collaborating with CERAM on this project are PORTEC (Switzerland), KERAMIK INSTITUT MEISSEN (Germany), THURINGIA NETZSCH (Germany), LIPPERT (Germany), V J GOODALLS (UK), IDEAL STANDARD (Belgium), DUDSON (UK), and DESIGNOR AB (Sweden).
