Report on Engineering Ceramics in Europe and the USA

A new 270-page report by Enceram (Menith Wood, Worcs, England) analyses the US and European markets for engineering ceramics, discusses the evolution of materials and product forms and highlights new commercial and technical opportunities. The markets for engineering ceramics - covering structural, environmental and process applications - were valued at €1.275 billion in Europe and US$1.348 billion in the USA in 2002. Other findings in the report include:

· Consumption is expected to reach €1.705 billion in Europe and US$1.655 billion in the USA by the year 2009, corresponding to growth rates of 4.2% and 2.9% respectively.

· The highest growth rates are expected for armour and general wear parts in the USA; bioceramics, bearings and high temperature filters in Europe; and diesel exhaust particulate filters and membranes in both regions.

· Ceramics market in process engineering, mainly steel continuous casting parts and kiln furniture, are significantly larger in Europe (€395 million) than in the USA (US$262 million).

· Seven multinational companies supply more than 60% of the total engineering ceramics demand in both regions combined. Overall, however, there are more than 150 significant suppliers of engineering ceramics and several dozen raw materials producers.

· Overall, Germany consumed about 36% of the European total in 2002, in spite of the economic slowdown in that country. The markets in France and the UK together were around 28% of the total. The USA is a net importer of engineering ceramics while Europe - especially Germany - produces more than it consumes.

The report costs €1,900, US$2,000 or 1,250. For further details on the content of 'Engineering Ceramics in Europe and the USA', e-mail John Briggs of Enceram at: john.briggs8@btopenworld.com
