Process Development Opportunity

CASE BASED REASONING APPLIED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CERAMIC FORMULATIONS

Many products within the ceramics sector (e.g. body, inks or glaze) rely on combinations of ingredients that can take considerable time and money to develop. CERAM has identified a significant opportunity to reduce lead-time in new product formulation development, Case-Based Reasoning. This technique maximises the benefits of knowledge already gained from the production of previous formulations.

CBR has already been successfully applied in pharmaceuticals to reduce lead-time in product development. Given a new tablet to be formulated CBR uses data from existing products, which it manipulates, to devise a solution for the new product. The traditional process for developing formulations in the ceramic sector parallels the traditional methods in pharmaceuticals. By enabling more efficient formulation CBR would lead to shorter development cycles, better quality and a reduction in production cost.

CERAM has received initial approval from the DTI for a feasibility study to develop a demonstration CBR system for the ceramics sector. CERAM is looking for partners interested in reducing their lead-time to develop new products by maximising the use of their current formulation data.

If you are interested and would like to discuss how your company might participate in the feasibility study then please contact -
