Blackouts Cut Tile Production in Central Vietnam

According to Thanh Nien, power outages in recent months cut production output and damaged machines and goods at Vietnamese central province businesses, but state monopoly power supplier Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) says the power shortage is far from over.

In a recent announcement to electricity companies in all provinces, EVN said power supplies would be cut by between 1,500MW and 2,500MW daily due to breakdowns at several power plants, including Ca Mau 1, Uong Bi and Phu My 2.

Various manufacturing customers were reported as having been severely affected by the outages. Amongst these was Anh Em Ceramic Tile Company (NMC), which operates in the zone. The company is reported as having lost nearly VND3 billion (US$178,000) due to four power cuts over the last few months.

“Sudden power cuts broke all our roller equipment needed to make our ceramic tiles,” said NMC’s Vice Chairman Trinh Quoc Nam. “The machines can only be bought abroad and the power cuts also ruined all our unfinished products that were on our production lines at the time.”
