2nd World Ceramic Biennial Prizes

The Grand Prize of the 2nd International Competition run at the 2nd World Ceramic Biennial 2003 in South Korea was awarded to Sun Koo Yuh, a Korean American artist, for his work entitled 'Alfred Summer'. This was submitted in the 'Ceramics as Expression' category and it presents African figures in the shape of a tower. It was selected from among 215 pieces that had passed the preliminary selection process.

It is a large sculpture measuring 2 metres by 43 centimetres high. The expressionist techniques employed in its creation give a strong impression to viewers. Mr Sun Koo Yuh will receive 30 million Korean won in cash and a scholarship of 10 million won.

Katsuko Nakashima from Japan won the Gold Prize with 'Table for a Festival' in the 'Ceramics for Use' category. In the 'Ceramics as Expression' category, Steven Montgomery from the USA won the Gold Prize with 'Divergent-C'. Gold Prize winners each receive 10 million won.

The Silver Prize winners, each of whom receives 5 million won, were Edmund de Waal (UK), Min Young Son (Korea), Stephen Hudson (Australia) and Fausto Salvi (Italy).

Out of a total of 2,454 entries by 1,481 artists from 68 countries, 36 artists were awarded prizes. They will be exhibited at the Icheon World Ceramic Center during the Biennial along with other works that passed the preliminary selection.
