International Ceramics Festival Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The 10th Anniversary International Ceramics Festival took place in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Wales from 1-3 July 2005 and attracted a truly international gathering of over 1,000 potters and ceramicists from all corners of the globe. From Africa, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China and from throughout Europe and the UK, all sectors of the ceramic world gathered together - from renowned master artists and professionals to ceramic enthusiasts.

Highlights of the weekend, which sold out months in advance, included:

• Demonstrations of traditional bonfire firings by Veronique Bambigbola and Angeline Hountchonou from Benin.
  
  
• Spectacular firings from, amongst others, Wali Hawes (India/Japan) building and firing a 'car kiln' in an old white Astra; Peter Lange from New Zealand firing an 'ice kiln'; building a kiln in a supermarket trolley and running a conveyor belt 'crematorium kiln' where little clay people were cooked in front of your eyes; and Ian Gregory (UK) building a fast fire rocket kiln.
  
  
• Apouri Ouele from Burkina Faso building and decorating a traditional adobe 'grenier' or grain store.
  
  
• Hands-on demonstrations from Hans and Briggite Borjeson (Denmark), Claire Curneen (Wales), John Gill (USA), Laura O'Hagan (Ireland), Wilma Cruise (South Africa); Ken Matsuzaki (Japan), Svend Bayer (UK), Carol McNicoll (UK), Henry Pimm (Ireland), Gustavo Perez (Mexico) and Janet DeBoos (Australia).
  
  
• Lectures, slide talks, films and discussions from Peter Lange (New Zealand), photographer James Morris, Henry Sandon, Lucy Casson, Ralf Burger (Germany), Marianne de Trey and Jeffrey Jones.
  
  
• Plus trade stalls; special performances of 'Greenfire' by Unpacked Theatre Company; Artist in Residence Jude Jelf (visiting through the Feile Clai Project, a joint initiative between Wales and Ireland); festival photographer David Hurn; demonstrations of Foot Wedging by San Hung Lee (Korea) and much, much more.
  
  The 11th festival will take place from 6-8 July 2007.
