US Wall Coverings Demand to Rise Steadily

According to a new report - Wall Coverings - published by The Freedonia Group Inc (Cleveland, OH, USA), demand in the USA for wall coverings is projected to advance by 4.3% annually from a weak 2004 base to US$2.4 billion in 2009.

Consumption has been negatively impacted for most of the last 10 years due to competition from paints and coatings, long-term weakness in the wallpaper sector, a severe cyclical downturn in manufactured housing and a weak non-residential building market.

Going forward, however, the basic demand fundamentals for wall coverings will be much improved, according to this study. In particular, the manufactured housing sector is expected to recover, as will key segments of non-residential building.

The report says that demand for ceramic wall tile is projected to increase by over 4% annually through until 2009. Ceramic tile represents the largest segment in the US wall coverings industry, due to the broad base of market sectors in which these products are used. Unlike some products, which are heavily dependent upon a single market, ceramic tiles are used widely in both residential and non-residential markets and in both new construction and repair and improvement projects.

The report projects demand for ceramic wall tile will rise from its 2004 level of US$780 million to US$955 in 2009, following up annual growth of 6.1% during the period 1999-2004 with projected annual growth of 4.1% from 2004-2009.

The book runs to 250 pages and is available from Freedonia for US$4,100.
