Siam Cement Group Enters Clay Roof Tile Venture with Lafarge Group

Cementhai Building Products (a wholly owned subsidiary of Siam Cement Group) and Lafarge Roofing (a wholly owned subsidiary of Lafarge Group) have entered into a clay roof tile joint venture in Thailand for domestic consumption through the purchase of an existing idle production facility from a local bank.

Based in the province of Rayong and with an annual production capacity of 1 million square metres, the production and marketing activities are expected to begin by the end of 2003. The registered capital of the joint venture will be 176 million baht, with Lafarge Roofing holding a majority 75% stake.

Cementhai said that the domestic clay roof tile business had great future potential. It said that by having a major global producer such as Lafarge as a partner, this would allow for the enhancement of the joint venture's production technology and management and place it at the forefront with other world leading clay roof tile manufacturers. In addition, products from the joint venture would be distributed domestically through Siam Cement Group's extensive dealer network.

Lafarge Roofing has more than 200 production sites in 38 countries on 4 continents. In 2001, Lafarge Roofing employed more than 12,600 people and generated sales of 1.6 billion euro.
