Ranti Tjan Takes Up Helm at European Ceramic Work Centre

Ranti Tjan took up the position of Director of the European Ceramic Work Centre (.ekwc) this month. He spent 24 hours a day at .ekwc (‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) during his first five days on the job; staying in one of the twelve apartments. This provided an intensive introduction to .ekwc's atmosphere and methods. As well as becoming acquainted with staff and participants, Ranti also spent many hours walking around 's-Hertogenbosch to get to know the town better. He previously spent almost six years as the director of the museum in Gouda and the eight years before that was head of presentation at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.

It has also been announced by the Centre that participants can turn to funds for financing. One of the current participants, Boris van Berkum, has received a subsidy from Fonds BKVB. Boris said: “I was invited to put on a solo exhibition in 2011 by Sjarel Ex, the director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. I immediately planned a residency at the .ekwc: I am a sculptor who works in ceramics and bronze. But what I lacked was funding for the production process.”

Boris applied for and received a subsidy from the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst [The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture]. Why did the foundation decide to support him? “I think my work was much liked by the committee and that my upcoming presentation in Boijmans positively influenced their decision", said Boris.
