Get to Top of the Class with H&R Johnson and Material Lab

H&R Johnson Tiles Ltd recently announced a groundbreaking design competition for architecture and interior design students. Budding designers will be able to showcase their work by designing the feature area of H&R Johnson's revolutionary surface design resource centre, Material Lab.

The competition, which kicks off at the beginning of the 2006/07 academic year, will be the highlight of the student design calendar. With entries coming from across the whole of the UK, competition is expected to be fierce. Judges include some leading names from the design industry, including;

• Dean Keyworth – Chairman, British Interior Design Association
• Tim Abrahams – Deputy Editor, Blueprint Magazine
• Ken Wilder - Tutor, Chelsea College of Arts
• Stephen Dixon – Marketing Director, H&R Johnson Tiles Ltd

Ken Wilder, a tutor at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, said: "Material Lab offers facilities that students will find invaluable, not only during their course, but post-graduation in their professional careers too. I'm confident that by offering students the opportunity to work in such an inspirational setting we will see some really impactful designs."

Located in the heart of central London, Material Lab brings technology and creativity together in a stimulating environment that features the latest in glass, wood, metal and ceramic. Visitors can choose the materials they wish to specify and take samples away with them to explore and experiment with in their own designs. A centre for creativity and innovation, Material Lab also features an inspiring and ever evolving new product area.

The student design competition is an opportunity for students to showcase their work to a wide range of audiences and act as a platform to launch successful careers in design, with the winning design installed in Material Lab. The design must feature tiles from H&R Johnson but there are no limits to the design or the materials that can be used - the new area can be a fully functioning space or a design purely for decorative purposes.

"This is a great opportunity for the cream of young British design talent - I'm looking forward to working with H&R Johnson and the students to help put British design on the map", added Dean Keyworth, Chairman, British Interior Design Association.

Stephen Dixon, Marketing Director at H&R Johnson concluded: "Material Lab is a cool, edgy and laidback venue and undoubtedly an inspirational setting. It is also a place for students to meet professional designers and who knows, a prospective employer.

"We want to appeal to the talent of the future and we want to showcase their flair and ability. This competition offers entrants a unique opportunity, to have their work displayed in the leading surface design studio in the UK. There is also an added incentive of an all-expenses trip for two to South Africa for the winner."
