Ceramics First Up in Major Crafts Council Show Series

For the first time ever, works from the Crafts Council's outstanding Collection of contemporary craft will go on display in its London gallery thanks to a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. 'Making It Yours', a series of annual exhibitions focusing on all aspects of craft, opens with a display drawn from this major ceramics collection.

From birdlike abstract vessels by Angus Suttie to the striking functional work of Walter Keeler, the exhibition explores ceramics in its many forms. Covering each decade from its inception in the 1970s through to the present day, the work reflects changes in fashion and collecting policy from the earthy stoneware pots of the 1970s to clean white contemporary pieces by Andrew Wicks.

Established major figures such as Lucy Rie, Hans Coper and Bernard Leach are represented alongside key contemporary makers such as Edmund de Waal, Julian Stair and Martin Smith, revealing the breadth and scope of the Collection.

'Making It Yours' will provide insight into aspects of ceramics covering four topics - design, materials, inspiration and method - explored in the exhibition's educational central section. Visitors are invited to discover more about ceramics by touching pieces from the Crafts Council Handling Collection and through the specially commissioned CD and also ceramic touch tiles.
