Economical Portable Thermal Imaging

Land Infrared (Dronfield, South Yorks, England) says its new palm sized thermal imager will be good news for maintenance engineers who until now have been unable to invest in their own instrument for their condition monitoring programme.

By taking advantage of advances in electro-optic techniques, the Cyclops PPM+ hand-held imager is said to combine high performance thermal imaging with accurate temperature measurement and good ergonomic design - all at an affordable price.

The instrument uses an uncooled 320 x 240 pixel, long wavelength, focal plane array detector, giving temperature resolution better than 0.1oC at 30oC, and operates in the 7 to 14 micron waveband.

It weighs just 2kg and uses a Compaq iPAQT which displays a high definition thermal image on its large, colour LCD screen; clearly visible at all levels of ambient light - even bright sunlight.

Capturing and storing images and transferring them to a computer is facilitated by the on-board pocket PC mounted on top of the imager, which has both USB and IRDA connectivity.

A 32MB flash card provides on-board image recording storage. Additional storage is available on a range of optional flash cards, up to 64MB.

Reports are readily generated using LIPS PPM+, the new Land Image Processing Software system, which provides an extensive range of temperature measurement and image analysis functions.
