Czech Republic to host glass melting event

The Czech Glass Society has announced the staging of the 12th Conference on Electric and other Highly Efficient Ways of Glass Melting in Tabor, Czech Republic from 11-13 September 2001.

The Society states that Czech glass research in the sphere of the electric current application to glass heating has always been ahead by approximately one decade. Recently, it reports, the research into the development of electric energy application has been supported by the high price of gas, ecological factors and the accessibility of both the electrical energy and the material of high quality (Mo, Pt) used for electrodes.

Furthermore, the increasing number of requirements for the quality of glass enabled the researchers to use an enormous potential of the former research papers. Thus, says the Society, the Czech Republic is a country which applies the process of full electric melting to borosilicate, crystal and special glass. It is also possible to apply electrical boosting to float and packing furnaces.

In the last two years, Czech research has succeeded in laying the foundations for the microwave melting of glass, which extends, to quote the Society "unexpectedly and incalculably", the possibilities of electric energy applications.
