Ceramic Handbook Series Now Includes Stoneware

A&C Black Publishers Ltd (London, England) has announced the publication of 'Stoneware' by Richard Dewar. The book looks at the fascination users of clay have had with transforming our natural materials into beautiful and accomplished pieces of art, down through the ages and right up to the present.

The author concentrates firstly on the raw materials required for producing high-fired ware, looks at the techniques required to create forms of function and decoration and finally focuses on finished pieces by carefully chosen contemporary ceramicists to illustrate and consolidate the investigation of these various processes.

The qualities and finishes that can be achieved with high firing appeal to many potters and ceramicists. However, firing clay at temperatures of about 1300°C imposes demands on the clay, glazes and kilns used that are not a problem with lower firings. In this book, Richard Dewar discusses the various considerations that need to be taken into account when working at these temperatures.

'Stoneware' is said to be a useful and informative reference book that will also provide inspiration for anyone wanting to work in this field.

The Ceramics Handbook series was conceived as an introduction to various topics and techniques relating to the use of clay. The books are aimed at the student or the practised ceramicist who may be experimenting in a new area.

'Stoneware' goes under ISBN 0-7136-5777-4 and is a paperback costing £12.99.
