Ceramic Certificate in Health & Safety Management

Heavy clay companies in the UK have been giving good backing to the new Ceramic Certificate in Health & Safety Management, part funded by the Health & Safety Executive and developed by the Building Products Training Council (BPTC) with assistance from the British Ceramic Confederation (BCC).

In June 2003, Red Bank Manufacturing Co Ltd approached the BPTC to request their first course. This was delivered by Irene Stevenson (Senior Training Advisor) to 10 people from Red Bank, four people from Hanson Brick Northern and one from thebrickbusiness.

Following the success of the course, a further two courses followed in October 2003 and December 2003 with another 20 people from Red Bank, two from Naylor Drainage and one from Freshfield Lane Brickworks.

BPTC said that the positive commitment by these companies showed their determination to reduce the possibility of accidents occurring in their workplace by raising awareness by individuals in Health & Safety.

The two-day course is taken over two weeks with a portfolio of exercises that have to be completed back on the shop floor over a four-week period. This means that the principles learned on the course are applied in real situations which makes the course very relevant to the employees' actual working environment. Satisfactory completion of the exercises and a final assessment lead to the award of the Ceramic Certificate in Health & Safety Management.
