Cabot Corp Acquires Assets of AP Materials Inc

Cabot Corporation (Boston, MA, USA) announced on 7 January 2008 that it had acquired the assets and technology of AP Materials Inc (St Louis, MO, USA).

AP Materials is an advanced materials company that produces high-purity powders for industrial applications using a novel flame process to create high surface area powders that are non-reactive and oxide free. AP Materials has used its proprietary manufacturing process to develop next generation tantalum powders. AP Materials licensed its core technology from Washington University in St Louis and has assigned its rights to Cabot.

Cabot Supermetals Vice President and General Manager, Eduardo Cordeiro, said: “The flame synthesis technology developed by AP Materials provides an exciting new platform for the manufacture of high surface area metal and metal alloy powders. We believe this technology will provide opportunities to bring new products to the marketplace and further enhance Cabot's position as the leading supplier of tantalum powders to the electronics industry.”

AP Materials' Chairman, Dr Richard Axelbaum, Associate Professor, Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering at Washington University, said: “AP Materials has advanced a fledgling technology using funding from our loyal investors, federal grants and others. The technology is now at a stage where further commercialization can best be achieved through the resources of a major corporation, such as Cabot Corporation. With its core competencies in flame technologies and tantalum processing, Cabot is ideally suited to utilize our flame synthesis process to produce more advanced tantalum and exploit it to the fullest”.
