National Audit Office report disappoints product manufacturers and suppliers

The National Audit Office report ‘Modernising Construction’ has been criticised by manufacturers and suppliers of construction products for failing to fully recognise the part that manufacturers and suppliers can play in providing best value construction.

Commenting on the report, Michael Ankers, Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association, said: "Whilst we welcome the importance the report attaches to best value construction and the need for greater co-ordination between the various industry improvement initiatives, the report does not sufficiently recognise that manufacturers and suppliers account for 40% of the cost of construction and they invest far more in innovation and research than other parts of the industry".

"There are many powerful instances where the involvement of manufacturers and suppliers at the outset of construction projects has brought considerable benefits to clients through, for example, improved design and reduced costs. Whilst some of the earlier parts of the report seem to acknowledge this, when it comes to the key recommendations, this has been overlooked".

"We will be meeting with the Office of Government Commerce to discuss how these shortcomings can be overcome".
