US Gypsum Offers New Mould-Inhibiting Casting Plasters

Two new mould-resistant gypsum casting plasters - USG White Art Plaster MR and USG No 1 Casting Plaster MR - are now available from the Industrial Products Division of US Gypsum Co (Chicago, IL, USA). Both products are manufactured with a mould-resistant biocide that inhibits the growth of mould on newly finished statuary and other cast products.

Under proper drying conditions, the mould-resistant formulations will effectively minimise the occurrence of mould and mildew on newly finished pieces. However, says the company, the products are not designed to ensure long-term mould protection as mould and mildew can grow subsequent to production when pieces are exposed to moisture and other conditions that encourage their growth.

USG White Art Plaster contains a surface hardening agent that minimises paint absorption when the dried cast is finished. It is said to give excellent detail, provides a hard surface and has low paint absorption.

USG No 1 Casting Plaster is the industry standard, claims USG, for figurines, plaques and lamp bases. Special additives maintain smooth working qualities and upon drying result in a hard working surface with reduced paint absorption and a degree of chip resistance.
