£1 Million Expansion in Advanced Ceramic Materials Announced by UCM

A £1 million expansion programme has been initiated at UCM subsidiary United Ceramics Ltd for its advanced ceramic materials plant in Stafford, England. The project will lead to a 50% increase in capacity to the plant. It has been initiated to satisfy the increasing demand for the group's specialist powders, principally micronised zirconia.

Chief Executive Bob Hughes said: "Our materials are essential to the emerging technical ceramics market. They are finding new uses in a variety of exciting applications, including: oxygen sensors in the automotive field; fibre optic connectors; wear resistant engineered components; and also in the production of fuel cells, the new alternative energy technology".

The expansion project, announced on 21 February, is expected to be complete in the first half of 2002, with capacity steadily increasing until final completion.

UCM, a fully listed company, manufactures a range of specialist ceramic products. Standard zirconia is principally used in the manufacture of high integrity refractory products, which are used in the production of steel; magnesia products are used in the manufacture of heating elements for the industrial and domestic appliance markets; and advanced ceramic materials are aimed at a variety of technical applications.
