New Micro Machining Centre Chooses PowerMILL

Delcam's PowerMILL has been chosen as the machining software at the recently opened West Midlands Micro-Machining Centre. The centre was established within the School of Engineering (Mechanical & Manufacturing Dept) at the University of Birmingham, England with the aid of a grant from Advantage West Midlands and additional investment from the university.

Other equipment acquired for the centre included a Matsuura LX-1 high-speed machining centre, an Agiecut Vertex wire EDM machine and an Agietron Compact 1 Micro die sink machine. Together with the university's existing capabilities, this gives the centre the ability to work with a wide range of ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic materials, including fully hardened tool steels, titanium alloys, nickel based superalloys, aluminium alloys, glasses, ceramics, composites and even diamond.

The formation of the centre follows significant growth in world-wide demand for the manufacture of components having dimensions of less than 10mm and significantly larger components with micro features, for use in the medical, automotive, aerospace and electronics/communications industries.

The principal objective of the centre is to help SMEs involved in key manufacturing sectors to develop and exploit micro-machining capabilities in order to diversify and improve manufacturing technology in the region.
