Role of Ceramic in Nuclear and Military Technologies to be Highlighted at ACerS Meeting

Radioactive waste vitrification and ceramic encapsulation are recognised in many circles as the best method to clean up and store nuclear waste for the long term. These processes mix nuclear waste with glass for easier handling and reduced volatility. These methods are currently being used to clean up several EPA/DOE Superfund sites across the USA.

Advances in this area will be covered in the Ceramic Science & Technology for the Nuclear Industry symposium at the 104th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) at America's Center in St Louis, MO, USA taking place from 28 April to 1 May 2002. This symposium will explore current technology, development, testing, evaluation and acceptability of ceramic and glass waste forms and ceramic nuclear fuels. More than 55 individual papers will be presented in this symposium by representatives from the USA, UK, France and other countries.

Also of interest will be the Frontiers of Science and Society - Rustum Roy Lecture and Friedberg Memorial Lecture. The first of these will be on 28 April 2002. Dr Sig Hecker, former directorate and senior fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory, will present 'Issues Associated with Nuclear Proliferation from the Countries of the Former Soviet Union'. It is free and open to the public. The second will be on 30 April and Dr James McCauley, senior research scientist with the US Army Research Laboratory will present 'A Design Based Approach to Ceramics Research'.

With an expected attendance of more than 2,500 people from approximately 25 countries, the meeting and expo is to be the largest technical ceramics event in the USA. It will feature more than 1,500 technical papers presented in 22 topical symposia, 12 focussed sessions and other forums.
