Metal Injection Moulding Takes Shape At Morgan Advanced Ceramics In Europe

Following many years of market leadership in metal injection moulding (MIM) in the US, Morgan Advanced Ceramics is to leverage this expertise to meet growing demand in Europe. Prime markets include medical, telecommunications and computer hardware with typical applications ranging from laparoscopic instruments to optic modulators.

During 2003 Morgan Advanced Ceramics will commission an entirely new, state-of-the-art MIM production facility at Stourport, UK, its largest manufacturing site in Europe.

MIM is ideally suited to high volume production of complex, intricate components. The UK facility will produce several million high-precision mouldings per year when fully operational. “MIM fits well with our core competencies in advanced materials technology” said Keith Parker, Marketing Director. “The technology, which uses fine metal powders, enables robust, difficult-to-machine alloys such as stainless steel, Kovar and CuMo to be moulded into fully dense, net-shape parts. The opportunities for high-end products are enormous”.

The MIM process produces components to individual customer specifications at a lower cost than that of machining. MIM components require virtually no additional machining and, in certain instances, several parts of an assembly can be moulded simultaneously in one shot. Also, multiple cavity moulds can reduce tooling costs considerably.
